I don't think that's necessarily the case -- it may be that Gardner is considered to be too valuable to continue in a "no chance to start absent injury" job, and that they believe they can trade him for good value.  If that's the case, they needed to shop for another backup.  Perhaps Beathard is still the answer, just not as good as Minshew.  Perhaps the Jags will continue to shop for a veteran backup.

Beathard is a worse player for 3 times the money that they signed because they knew him. If he's not the answer then it's just another mark against the front office.
