My husband is in the camp of having two degrees he worked and paid for with no student loans and has been in his field for 25 years. To think a cashier or any minimum wage/unskilled worker would make anywhere near roughly half of what he does straight out of high school or whatever...hell no.  He said he'd be tempted to leave local government and go to private industry where he would make a lot more, but if he does that before his retirement date in five years he loses benefits, pension and other stuff.
