I'll disagree to a point. I think one of the biggest reasons Shad hired him was to get fan interest rejuvenated, especially in the form of ticket sales.

And that's where "what the fans think" will always matter. If the team is losing but still selling plenty of tickets, the owner will tend to be patient with a coach. Empty stadia lead to impatience, and impatience leads to hasty firings or irresponsible hirings.
