Impressions From The Dolphins Game

#17

Feels great to finally get a win!!!

Before our drive at the end of the first half I was pretty disappointed with how we were playing. Looked like today was going to be the first game all year where we not only didn't improve but regressed. However those TDs at the end of the first half and beginning of second half changed the whole course of the game. We still lack enough playmakers to put teams away but was glad to see how hard they fought. Never gave up. And finally made enough plays to pull out a win. Gotta give the defense credit. They came up with some big plays when they needed it. Weren't great all day but made enough plays at clutch moments!

Lawrence looked great for the most part. Every now and then he gets a little inaccurate but by and large the dude makes big time throws and shows he knows how to be clutch. Dolphins marched down the field on the opening drive and scored a TD to start. Instead of panicking was good to see us respond with our own points even if just a FG. Throw to Marvin was great. Had a big throw down the seam to Agnew(I think?) and then obviously the 4th down play at the end of the game had to be perfect and he was. We're lucky to have him.

Sadly we just don't have enough playmakers on offense. Chark isn't an elite level player but we missed him today. Viska doesnt get a ton of separation and doesnt have good enough hands to compensate. Solid player but we need more. Marvin is a really solid player who made an awesome catch today but he isnt someone the defense is afraid of. I like that we are getting Agnew more involved. We need him to be.

Thought the defense had its up and downs but came up big when we needed them. Almost as though we were fortunate the Dolphins were close enough to run for it on that 4th down. Was more afraid of Tua throwing it. We are going to have this same problem all year. Not enough pressure and coverage isn't tight enough. But give them credit today. Held the Dolphins only 10 points after those first two drives and the huge stop at the end of the game.

I know I'm going to be in the minority on this but I didn't have a problem with us going for it on 4th down instead of kicking that FG halfway into the 4th quarter. I like the aggressiveness and I like playing for the win. As a Vandy grad and a Jags fan, I've seen a lot of terrible football over the years. And I've been rooting for teams who far too often are undertalented compared to their opponent. And there is nothing I hate more than playing by the conventional wisdom and being safe and not playing to win. Last night Vandy had a 3 point lead with about a minute and a half to go. 4th and about 4 inside the 10 yard line after marching it down the field. Unlike Meyer, Vandy's coach decides to play it safe and kick the FG. And their undertalented defense allows SC to march down the field for a winning TD and we lose by 1. Play for the win! If the Jags converted that 4th down and were able to score a TD on the drive, the game is likely over. But who knows how the game plays out if they do kick the FG. Maybe the Dolphins still march right down for a TD to tie it. And maybe instead of us being down by 3, if it's a tied ball game and only a few minutes to go, we don't allow Wright to attempt a 55 yard FG giving the Dolphins a short field if he misses. And instead punt it away. Or maybe we go for it there and dont get it giving the Dolphins great field position anyways. You never know how things will play out but I like our chances up 11 halfway through the 4th. Keep playing to win! At least this time we had our best RB on the field for the 4th down play. Baby steps.

I thought Miami going for it on 4th down at the end of the game was far more risky and stupid than us going for it on 4th down instead of taking the FG.

And while I give credit to Meyer and team for being aggressive, I've seen them getting a ton of credit for that play call on 4th down with 5 seconds left. The announcers sure seemed stunned as it happened but everyone I was watching the game with was yelling at the tv before the play that they should do exactly what the team did. I didn't think that was a surprisingly brilliant decision by the coaches. If anything they should be faulted for not calling timeout with 6 or 7 seconds left to give themselves a bit more time. I give more credit to Lawrence and Viska for executing it to perfection.
