Impressions From The Dolphins Game

#1
(This post was last modified: 10-17-2021, 01:54 PM by Bullseye. Edited 1 time in total.)

Despite our continued ineptitude on 4th in short inside the red zone, despite stupid penalties, despite dropped passes, despite bad sacks we did it!!!  We broke the streak!!!  Here are my thoughts...

1.  Thank you Matt Wright!!!  Both All three of your FGs were things of beauty and very necessary.  That first one looked like a bad miss to the right, but it curved back in and snuck inside the right upright for the FG, and the last one was perfect!   Great job Matt Wright!!!!!

2.  Hats off to the defense on that 4th and 1 stop.  The defense had been frustrating me all game long, seemingly unable to stop them at all throughout the game.  The pass rush would seem to get good pressure on Tua only to never get there.  The series immediately after the blown 4th and 1 inside the 10 was an unmitigated disaster.  But when it counted the most, Josh Allen and company stepped up and stopped him short of the first down!  I didn't think I would find myself typing this anytime soon, but great job coming through in the clutch defense!

3.  If there were a 3rd hero of the game, it is the Dolphins' DB that touched the receiver down on that 4th down slant.  But for him lacking the awareness and touching him down, the Jaguars can't call time out, and the game goes into overtime.  Actually, Bevell and Schottenheimer should get credit for that play call.  They've been getting hammered all year for poor play calling, and deservedly so.  But considering we had timeouts remaining, that quick slant to get us into FG range...throwing it close to the defender, was brilliant!

4.  Three straight games, we've had catastrophic failures in 4th and 1 inside the opponents' 10 yard line.  Whether it's the poor play calling or the timing on the play is always bad, we absolutely have to get better at that.  In two of those instances, we could have taken the points.  Although I supported going for it in the bulk of those instances, we will have to start attempting the FG if we can't execute any better.  Had we kicked a FG, the game would not have gotten down to the last second FG.  This is especially important when we actually forced a turnover to get into that position.  We have to find a way to come away with points.

5.  I have never seen a RB get more long runs called back by penalty than James Robinson.  The camera was horribly out of focus, so I could not see the alleged face mask penalty on Farrell.  But damn, Robinson is snakebitten when it comes to long runs.  On that run that got the Jaguars down to the 1, I was expecting a flag on that lay, and my heart sank when they said it was a fumble.  Fortunately he recovered the ball.  That said, even though he had a rough going of it early on, I thought it was another fine performance by JRob.

6.  The drops were getting on my nerves.  While Arnold had another good game for us, that first series drop that would have given us first and goal inside the 10 was a killer.  Not every throw is going to be perfect.  Our guys need to come up with more of these catches.

7.  Rookie Watch:

     A.  Trevor Lawrence-had a pretty good game, though his stats were not gaudy.  He threw a TD and no INTs.  In most games this year, there were stretches where it seemed like he couldn't buy a completion and the offense would completely bog down.  Today, however, there was a stretch in the early 3rd quarter where it seemed he was getting hot.  There were a couple of plays I thought he might have been better served staying in the pocket as opposed to trying to scramble outside of a blitz, but there were a few other plays where his athleticism paid off handsomely getting outside of free rushers.  He did have the fumble that killed a drive, but it would have been helpful if Taylor bothered to throw a block for him.

     B.  Travis Etienne-DNP.  On iR and out for the year

     C.  Tyson Campbell-DNP

     D.  Walker Little-DNP

     E.  Andre Cisco-I did not notice him in the game at all.

     F.  Jay Tufele-saw him in uniform, but did not notice him making any plays.

     G.  Jordan Smith-Did not notice him.  Was he active?

     H.  Luke Farrell-IIR he had a catch, and he also had that face mask penalty that wiped out the long JRob run.

8.  I think Jawaan Taylor had a bad game.  He was decent throughout the first half, but gave up sacks/pressures in the second half.  The schedule isn't going to get any easier after the bye.  He will have to bounce back from this performance.

9.  Great toughess coming back from injuries demonstrated by both Marvin Jones and LaViska Shenault, both of whom were limping in the game.  If they weren't able to return, I don't know what the hell the offense would have done without them.

10.  While I'm at it, Jamaal Agnew produced another big play.  If we were a better team in a bigger or more respected market, he'd be a star by now.

11.  Bottom line:  It was ugly at times, but this was a great way to end the streak and go into the bye.  I'm proud of the guys for their continued fight.  All three phases of the game showed up and contributed to the win, and man does it feel good!

I saw Walker Little in there after Bartch was injured.

My takeaway is ... TLAW is the TRUTH!

Lawrence continues to show he's the next up and coming elite QB. If he were playing for a team with a decent roster and coaching he'd probably have a winning record and be a lock for rookie of the year. As it is he's holding the Jaguars up already. He made some really great throws in this game, and a few of them were dropped.

Jordan Smith was inactive again.

Not sure why we aren't getting any of the rookies some reps.

The game winning kick by Wright was kicked right down the middle. No doubt about it, as soon as it left his foot. Dude just became a rock star.

Agnew made a bone head play but he’s a threat anytime he gets the ball. He’s perfect for that little bubble screen they like to call. And he went up and got one too.

It was good to see Lambo be the first to congratulate Wright on the Game winning Kick.

Not sure how you bring Lambo back after this.

I agree.

Taylor, Jones-Drew, Robinson couldn’t bring home the hardware. If Trevor continues to keep the ints down, he could be the 1st Jaguars rookie of the year.

TLaw played amazing, I don’t think you are giving him due credit. While Tua had 10 yards of separation to hit his receivers, Trevor had 10 inches yet he outperformed him! The future is BRIGHT!!!!

I will believe it when I see it in terms of TL bringing home ROTY hardware.

I think Jamar Chase gets it followed by Mac Jones.

Was Lambo still out due to injury or he’s a healthy scratch?

Kicking won us the game when it's been a huge issue. Viska struggled to catch all game but came in clutch. There's been some bad play calls but the call to pass to get into range and get the time out was a great call.

Lambo is very likely done in Jacksonville. Bringing Wright to the active roster leaves the Jags little option but to cut him.

Yeah Lambo is done in Jax. Wright just went back to back in biggest kicks of the year. Tied it, then won it. Also made his extra points.

Feels great to finally get a win!!!

Before our drive at the end of the first half I was pretty disappointed with how we were playing. Looked like today was going to be the first game all year where we not only didn't improve but regressed. However those TDs at the end of the first half and beginning of second half changed the whole course of the game. We still lack enough playmakers to put teams away but was glad to see how hard they fought. Never gave up. And finally made enough plays to pull out a win. Gotta give the defense credit. They came up with some big plays when they needed it. Weren't great all day but made enough plays at clutch moments!

Lawrence looked great for the most part. Every now and then he gets a little inaccurate but by and large the dude makes big time throws and shows he knows how to be clutch. Dolphins marched down the field on the opening drive and scored a TD to start. Instead of panicking was good to see us respond with our own points even if just a FG. Throw to Marvin was great. Had a big throw down the seam to Agnew(I think?) and then obviously the 4th down play at the end of the game had to be perfect and he was. We're lucky to have him.

Sadly we just don't have enough playmakers on offense. Chark isn't an elite level player but we missed him today. Viska doesnt get a ton of separation and doesnt have good enough hands to compensate. Solid player but we need more. Marvin is a really solid player who made an awesome catch today but he isnt someone the defense is afraid of. I like that we are getting Agnew more involved. We need him to be.

Thought the defense had its up and downs but came up big when we needed them. Almost as though we were fortunate the Dolphins were close enough to run for it on that 4th down. Was more afraid of Tua throwing it. We are going to have this same problem all year. Not enough pressure and coverage isn't tight enough. But give them credit today. Held the Dolphins only 10 points after those first two drives and the huge stop at the end of the game.

I know I'm going to be in the minority on this but I didn't have a problem with us going for it on 4th down instead of kicking that FG halfway into the 4th quarter. I like the aggressiveness and I like playing for the win. As a Vandy grad and a Jags fan, I've seen a lot of terrible football over the years. And I've been rooting for teams who far too often are undertalented compared to their opponent. And there is nothing I hate more than playing by the conventional wisdom and being safe and not playing to win. Last night Vandy had a 3 point lead with about a minute and a half to go. 4th and about 4 inside the 10 yard line after marching it down the field. Unlike Meyer, Vandy's coach decides to play it safe and kick the FG. And their undertalented defense allows SC to march down the field for a winning TD and we lose by 1. Play for the win! If the Jags converted that 4th down and were able to score a TD on the drive, the game is likely over. But who knows how the game plays out if they do kick the FG. Maybe the Dolphins still march right down for a TD to tie it. And maybe instead of us being down by 3, if it's a tied ball game and only a few minutes to go, we don't allow Wright to attempt a 55 yard FG giving the Dolphins a short field if he misses. And instead punt it away. Or maybe we go for it there and dont get it giving the Dolphins great field position anyways. You never know how things will play out but I like our chances up 11 halfway through the 4th. Keep playing to win! At least this time we had our best RB on the field for the 4th down play. Baby steps.

I thought Miami going for it on 4th down at the end of the game was far more risky and stupid than us going for it on 4th down instead of taking the FG.

And while I give credit to Meyer and team for being aggressive, I've seen them getting a ton of credit for that play call on 4th down with 5 seconds left. The announcers sure seemed stunned as it happened but everyone I was watching the game with was yelling at the tv before the play that they should do exactly what the team did. I didn't think that was a surprisingly brilliant decision by the coaches. If anything they should be faulted for not calling timeout with 6 or 7 seconds left to give themselves a bit more time. I give more credit to Lawrence and Viska for executing it to perfection.

Next Gen stat of the game: Tua Tagovailoa was 8 of 8 for 163 yards on intermediate passes, but 0 of 5 on deep passes against Jacksonville.

NFL Research: Matthew Wright is the first kicker in NFL history to make multiple FGs of 50-plus yards in the last four minutes of the fourth quarter in a single game.

Trevor Lawrence continues to get better and better, despite horrible play calls from the coaches. Seriously, can the receivers please hold onto the damn passes? The dropped passes continue to pile up. This team desperately needs a reliable #1 receiver.

We need to thank our lucky stars that the Dolphins were without their top 2 receivers and top 2 CB's. This is what we needed to end the losing streak, but this team still continues to struggle on defense. Particularly the pass rush. There was none to speak of again today. A win is a win though. I'm just enjoying watching Trevor continue to get better. He just needs some help.
