I really thought we were gonna get some big name players last offseason. I've learned to temper my expectations. If we landed a premium FA like Scherff, I'd probably pass out from disbelief. I'd pass on Ertz. He's on the wrong side of 30, so who knows how much longer he can be productive? TE's normally have a shorter shelf life. I really like this TE class a lot. I wanna draft a TE fairly early, who can grow a long with Trevor Lawrence.

I would have some mized feelings about a class like this.

From a pure quality standoiuint, it would far exceed last year's class.

Ertz showed last year he still has something left in the tank and he knows the offense.

I think Scherff can get us some quality snaps for us at G.

Robinson would be a nice get, but he alone would be far from the answer at WR.  If we left FA having just signed him, the position would still be a top 3-4 priority in the draft.

Barnett played 4-3 DE with the Eagles under Pederson.  Unsure how well he would transition to 3-4 OLB, but I liked him coming out of Tennessee.

From a talent and experience perspective, this would be a decent haul, but it would be older than the typical FA haul I would want.  My fear is that they would all be one year stopgaps and we'll have to spend more money at the same positions in a year or two.  We won't have that much more time left under TL's rookie contract.  We gotta make it count for the longest time possible.

I was assuming this was referring to re-signing Cam Robinson.

I understand your concerns completely and share them.

But to be clear, when I describe them as one year stopgaps above, I don't necessarily mean these would literally be one year contracts.  They would be 2-3 year deals, but given the age of the players, possible decline of those players, and how the contracts could be structured, it could work out that way.

We need to front load those contracts while we have the cap space. That way it's easier to get out of those deals without having a lot of dead money on the books in future years.
