However, the earlier riots were not threats to the Republic  itself and do not merit any congressional investigation.

The Jan 6 riot was also an insurrection and also merits congressional investigation and no one should be calling it a mere "dustup".
Sorry, but that's a load of crap. Those people that got arrested for rioting and burning stuff were out of jail by the next day or so. People LITERALLY took over a part of a city and controlled who went in and out. That is not a threat to the Republic? Seriously? Nothing has or is going to happen to any/many of them of any consequence. If you think some idiots wondering around the buildings that many were actually let in are a realistic threat to the republic then it's not very strong to begin with. Now, if they showed up armed and forced their way in by bombing the building, that's a different story. If the current staff remain in office, we won't have to worry about this much anymore because our country will not last another leftist President, House, and Senate.

I have friends in Seattle.  They reported that they were free to visit the "chaz" or "chop" and come and go as they pleased. One of these friends is a Republican.
And that you would even compare these things shows that you need to review civics.
Sovereign power Is held by the 535 members of Congress, and the president. None of those people are or were in Portland or Seattle.
Again I am by no means excusing what happened in Portland and Seattle, it was bad, but even an attack on the city of Washington DC would not have been as serious.
This was literally an attack on the people who make up the government specifically, not on any city, not on a local police force, but all the way at the top, at the people who hold power at the top.
If it's not already obvious to you, try this thought exercise.
Imagine that all the 2020 protests were actually were actually anti covid restriction, pro trump people. You don't have to imagine that hard actually, The state capital in Michigan was taken over by such people, and they were armed.
Then imagine that at some point in 2021, thousands showed up to hear Bernie Sanders speak near the White House, and he told the mob to go to the White House, where Trump was, and the mob did, and tried to break in.
In that case, would you even dream of arguing that the 2020 riot was just as bad as the 2021 one? Would you be arguing, "it's not so bad, it's so bad, those socialist goons trying to break into the White House weren't armed." Of course not! you would be insisting that that some of them had backpacks and baggy pants and because none of them were checked before entering, and few of them were apprehended at the site, no one knows who was armed and who was not armed. Right? You would say that those people at the very least wanted to threaten Trump so he changed a decision about something, worst case, they wanted to kill him. Right?
My fellow southpaw Mark Brunell will probably always be my favorite Jaguar.
