I thought he made some questionable decisions. It seemed like he had a gunslinger mentality which is fine but will prob result in more turnovers in the regular season.
His random poor decisions are the absolute most frustraiting thing to me. It feels like most of the times last year when he'd throw into coverage it was never a situation that warranted it. It could be first down, 1st quarter, tie game and he'd throw it into double coverage and it would just make me scratch my head. He makes some really good decisions and then follows it with either an inaccurate pass or just a really bone headed throw. I saw this type of play in every game last year, and in a ton of his snaps at Clemson. It's by far my main concern, right above his shaky accuracy at times.
He does things you'd expect him to do down late or under pressure.
He threw the ball 12 times last night.
How many mistakes or bad decisions did you see?
Here's what actually happened:
1. beautiful throw to ZJ on sideline - passed up #11 open underneath to connect deeper against one-on-one - saw the CB back turned and threw a strike
2. Slight overthrow to Zay
3. Designed roll out with two TE rolling with him, both were well covered, TL wisely tried to lead Engram inside away from the good coverage but Engram was planted and didn't move back inside where the ball was placed
4. Defensive holding stopped the route he was throwing to (deep crosser) - he saw it - threw it at the feet of underneath guy accepting the free 1st down - basically a throwaway
5. Great pass over the middle to Manhertz, came out a touch late but had enough zip to make up for it - patient in pocket with some pressure here
6. Forced one to Treadwell when he should have waited a beat and floated one to Engram
7. Etienne dropped ball
8. Grounds ball when about to be sacked
9. Good pass to corner of EZ, PI not called - underneath routes were covered
10. good pass to Treadwell
11. Swing pass to ETN - well executed (easy velocity - not lasered)
12. TD to Engram
That's 2 mistakes by my count. (104.5 QBR)
What you got?
Regarding the statement in red:
He didn't do any of that vs the browns, and in fact most of that stuff that he did last year was when he was down by 2 scores or more and trying to come back with a crappy playbook and very little help.
His stats on first downs during the first half of games last season were all above average. Some very good.
It was when he had his back to the wall that the majority of his rookie mistakes happened.
Making two mistakes out of 12 attempts last night was far from perfect, but neither error resulted in an INT, and he was responsible for leading the offense to put 13 points on the board in 16 minutes of a football game.
So, what frustrated you?
