Yes, Finn as a strong black character could have been more like Lando, maybe more conventionally black, but more importantly, Finn needed a clearer character arc as you say.
And it does matter that Rey is a Mary Sue.  Her teenage energy and lack of training need to cause her to bumble and have tantrums from time to time, like Luke did, and they didn't show that.
All of these things make the sequels bad.  All of them matter.  
None of them are "woke" in any way though.  They're just incoherent.
