Why does she have to be white? The little mermaid was originally written by Danish author Hans Cristian Anderson in the early 1800’s. There is not a lot of diversity now in Denmark, and I’m thinking it was probably even less back in Hans time. So it’s not going very far out on a limb to say she was written as a white character and has been historically white in books and film for nearly 200 years. It’s not that she “has” to be white, it’s just that she is white. Instead of making a black and white version of classic movies, why not make the effort to create a new movie with its own story line?
