Minnesota has its own unusual laws.  He was convicted of "unintentional second degree murder." I agree there was nothing premeditated about it, nothing intentional, nor any kind of rage or passion.  I would be that's what the Minnesota statutes say.  In another state that might be manslaughter.  In MN it was 2nd degree murder.
