Let's Talk About- Political Edition

(12-23-2023, 09:07 PM)Lucky2Last Wrote: Fair. It is ideological. Here's where I am so far. As South Carolina Governor, Nikki Haley supported substantial subsidies to Boeing. In 2013, she signed a bill providing Boeing with $120 million in bonds for facility expansion in the state. Earlier, in 2009, as a legislator and gubernatorial candidate, she backed a $900 million subsidy package for Boeing to establish manufacturing facilities in South Carolina. Now, I don't have problems with that in and of itself, as it's her job as governor to bring jobs to her state. By itself, that means nothing. However, she left office as her parent's hit a financial crisis and took a position with Boeing. Her net worth jumps from under a million (which was mostly her 350,000 house and a 400,000 loan she gave to her parents) to 8 million dollars in a few years. Not only that, but she also somehow managed to afford a 2.4-million-dollar home as she joined the Boeing board, despite making a modest income and having her parent's quit paying back the loan. She wrote a book and started getting paid speaking gigs at corporations, and, while that's not new, she outpaced other politicians who have done the same. You mean to tell me that none of that taints her? Once you start down that road, when does it stop. Look at Bernie Sanders. Elizabeth Warren. Joe Biden. Once politicians start making a living via politics... not just making a living, but making a small fortune, it changes the nature of their ABILITY to put the people over their own interests. Do you want me to keep going? Or is that evidence enough to suggest that I'm on the right track and it's at least plausible. |
