It was such a stupid, unforced error. Perhaps she's trying to thread a needle by not getting into a racial discussion, but this only makes it worse because it's sidestepping a glaring historical fact. You can rest assured this will bring other pointed questions her way.

I think she could play it to her advantage. 

1.  Gain attention.
2.  Go to war with the media when they press her on it. 
3.  Make the Neo-Confederates in the right wing of the Republican party think she's one of them.

I guarantee you, her advisors are planning how to spin this to her advantage.
