If we don't take a Qb in the first, which Rookie QB do we take later?

#35

What are you looking for with your late round QB?  Are you looking for a guy who will be a great teammate, will be able help the starter as he dissects plays from the sideline, and is competent enough to hold down the fort for a few games while the injured starter rehabs injury?  Or are you looking for a guy who has the long term potential to develop into an above average starting QB?

If the former, I think a guy like Aaron Murray or Connor Shaw.  A great team player.  Will work hard.  Good enough to win a few games in the right scheme designed to hide their flaws.  I dont believe either of them are good enough to develop into an above average QB.  Just dont have the physical skills.  And they have enough experience where I think the upside is limited.

If the latter, I like Tom Savage.  Obviously very raw and has his weaknesses.  Didnt handle the rush well at times and took too many sacks.  But has limited game experience due to the transfer rule so lots of room to get better.  He was freshman of the year in the Big East and then basically didnt play for 3 seasons.  He may as well have been a freshman all over again last year.  So he definitely has potential for growth and development.  From a physical standpoint, has the big time arm you want.  In watching 5 minutes of his highlights I saw more big time NFL throws than Ive seen watching hours of Bortles, Bridgewater, and Manziel combined.  He has the skillset.  He just needs experience and coaching.  Will he develop into a top 10 or top 15 NFL QB?  Probably not.  But odds are nobody drafted after the 2nd round will be.

I didnt mention Garop.  I'm definitely intrigued by him but didnt list him cuz I think he'll be gone in the 2nd.  I dont think of him as a late round QB.  I liked what I saw at the East/West and Senior Bowl.  I keep reading that he flinches at phantom pressure so thats obviously a big concern.  Not sure the validity of that though.  If true, I'd want to stay away.  At least stay away early in the 2nd.  If he was sitting there in the 4th I wouldnt think twice about taking him... phantom pressure or not.
