11 years of Khan's past behavior would be my first guess.

Baalke also just signed a heap of guys to long-term deals, many of whom he is responsible for bringing aboard. I for sure could see Khan giving him the shot to pick the coach that he thinks can take the roster as constructed and make it the winner Shad thought it would be in his preseason declaration.

Not that hard to see the patience in Khan if you look back. Heck, I could even see him making the choice up to Doug to stay or go, but he's gotta figure out what the team is built to do and work within that confine AND have that fire. I just don't know if Doug wants to keep fielding the same questions about job security week in and week out. He may just walk away on his own.

It sucks, really thought we were on to something, like stories were being rewritten. Turned out to be just a different chapter in the same book.
