Seriously. Put a size 5 shoe next to a size 9 shoe much less a 10-11 and tell me it makes sense. 

Are men's sock sizes as absurd? I've only bought them once for myself and it was many years back. 

Also, clothing sizes. I bought a pair of PJ pants to wear around the house and liked the fit and length so I bought another pair of that brand but in a different print and they're are not the same size even though the tag says they are. 

Old Navy jeans fit me really well and they have tall sizes. I'm 5'10" with long arms and legs and short torso so length is important. The only thing that sucks is they don't sell tall sizes in their stores (not the one closest to me anyway) so I have to drive an hour to the closest store, try clothes on to make sure they fit, then go home and order them online. Last year I bought a pair from their website. I liked them so last week I ordered another pair of the same exact make/model and size/length. I pulled them out of the package and tried them on. They were a size too large and about 1.5 inches shorter than the tag on them states. It's freaking ridiculous. 

First world problems but still it's absurd. I don't mind being tall but buying clothes and shoes is stressful.
