I wasn't pounding the table for anyone to get fired at season's end or pounding the table for any specific replacement candidate (though Vrabel seemed the safest bet to me). I'm withholding judgement until games are played, but the clip is definitely cringe and objectively funny even as a fan of the team. And there's plenty of "warning signs" we will be pointing to if this doesn't work out, especially if it's evident pretty quickly. My concerns are mostly body language related and somewhat superficial. He comes off like a goober as pointed out on PMS. He's young at 39. He turned himself into a meme in his introductory press conference. He comes off a bit as "just happy to be here and happy to have gotten the bag." No one else seemed interested in hiring him as HC. He handled himself somewhat poorly during the process of going back and forth between remaining with the Bucs and taking the HC job here. It has been reported that part of what convinced him to re-open discussions with the Jags was having had a conversation by phone with Baker and other Bucs players who were in the Caribbean telling him he should absolutely take the job. This part comes off as someone who is a consensus builder rather than an alpha decision maker who knows what he wants and has a plan to get it and it's a bit wishy washy. None of these things alone is that big of a deal, but the combination of them has me on alert. I like what he did in Tampa and what he is credited with doing in his prior stops. I hope that's what we're getting and what we'll see early on this year, but HC is a different animal than coordinator. I think he may benefit from having an older, veteran DC/assistant HC if such a candidate is available and willing to come here. I was never cancelling my tickets as some have threatened or have already done. I'm the furthest thing from overly emotional football fan. I'm here for the highs which have been few and far between and I disconnect pretty quickly and move on during the lows. It's just football after all and not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of life. But I do read people pretty well if I do say so myself and I'm just on alert given what I've seen over the past week is all. The guys involved in hiring him know what he was like in the interview process and by all of their accounts he knocked it out of the park. Is that just what gets said whenever anyone gets hired or are those comments genuine? Who knows. One or more others here have preemptively tried to give Khan a pass on this hire if it doesn't work out. I would disagree with that. If it doesn't work out and it becomes pretty evident early on that that's the case, all of these things I've pointed out and more will get pulled back under the microscope by the media and if I'm seeing these things in the little snippets we've gotten, they should absolutely have seen them during the interview process. I hope this wasn't a "let's hire a young offensive mind because we haven't tried that route yet" vs a true evaluation of all available candidates and then choosing the clear best one and throwing everything at them. We all deserve to see some winning around here and we're long overdue for some consistency in that department. |
