What's controversial? It's a common observation, and a common partial explanation of how Nazis came to power.  It's known as Popper's Paradox of Tolerance.

Now, is society today in a situation where some people are calling for dehumanization and mass murder? Not in the US.  But in the middle east, absolutely.   In 1930s Germany, absolutely.
