People like you would scoff at the idea of trading ANY player, unless the player clearly had no value at all to the team and thus of course, couldn't net any return value in a trade, either.

So you want to sign Cecil to a long term contract (that will be pricey; you're not getting him long term, cheap)....when in a year or 2 at the most, he's going to likely be finding PT scarce when Lee and Robinson are well into their ascent, combined with likely improvement/ further involvement from Sanders. Then of course, trading Shorts AT THAT TIME because of a more expensive contract, will prove tougher, if not impossible, and we'll be forced to either keep him on the roster at the bloated contract despite there not being enough footballs to go around.....or cut him and get nothing.....

That's an assumption on your part.  The team has the leverage right now based on his track record.  They also have a track record that shows they're not going to overpay for his services.  If they're working on an extension now, they'll more than likely offer him market value for his services.  If he doesn't take it, so be it.  He'll play out his contract and move on.  I don't see them trading him in either instance.
