Third, what about other sorts of "physical punishment". My dad use to quickly and harmlessly pull the tiny little hairs on the back of my neck if I was extremely out of line. There was really no lasting effects, but it sure got the point across. It reminds me of how Caeser Millan and his "Tsst!" routine.
