What we traded was the last 5 games of Monroe's contract.    If we wanted to re-sign the guy, we could have still signed him at the end of the year, whether we traded him or not, because he was a free agent.   That's what people don't seem to understand.  

 

So the choice was, do we want the last 5 games of Eugene Monroe's contract, or do we want Telvin Smith and Aaron Colvin?    We traded Monroe's last 5 games for a 4th round pick and a 5th round pick.   And those two players were picked in the 4th and 5th rounds.  

 

So, please understand, if we had wanted to re-sign Monroe, we could have still done so, even after trading him.   He was a free agent.   What we traded was 5 games of his career.  That was it.  

 

So, which would you want: Eugene Monroe for 5 games, or Telvin Smith and Aaron Colvin for 4 years each?   That's an easy one.
