For example, Alex Smith will never be considered elite. He has never shown the ability to be considered elite, while Luck has shown enough in a very short amount of time.

 

As for the Bortles comparison, I truly do not think there is any. Here are the reasons why Bortles did not have an amazing season:

 

1. Poor O-line

2. Lack of run game

3. inexperienced receiving corps, with the exception of Shorts

4. Poor overall talent on the team, including defense.

5. Coaching

 

Luck dealt with all of these same issues, but still played well enough his rookie year to lead the team to the playoffs. I believe that if Luck was drafted by the Jaguars, the Jaguars would be in the playoffs and the Colts would be watching from home -- he's that good, just not elite, yet.

I see a few problems with you saying Luck had all of those problems...

Oh, really? Bruce Arians led the Colts that year, you remember him? The guy who's being talked about as coach of the year?

The Colts had an average defense that year, not the worst but not the best. The Jaguars did experience a similar defense but they weren't defenses lacking talent.
Overall the Colts were way more experienced and talented in 2012 than the Jaguars were in 2014.
Also, you believe Luck was good enough to lead this team with "poor overall talent"  to the playoffs, but somehow he's not elite. Can you name any good/above average QBs who led their team to the playoffs?
