I wouldn't say looking at game tape is "hard" per se.

 

I would say, however, that it is an incomplete measure of a player-just one piece out of a puzzle.

 

Just about every player that could be labeled a first round bust had great college game tape, from Walt Patulski and Tony Mandarich to Tebow and Manziel and every bust in between.

 

The thing is, character can make the difference between a successful NFL player and a bust.

 

Without question, Justin Blackmon had all of the talent needed to succeed at the NFL level.  However, his substance abuse/dependence issues kept him from realizing his enormous potential.  Conversely, the WR taken in the same draft from Notre Dame, Michael Floyd, had all kinds of documented issues with substance abuse/dependence, but he has been a productive player for the Cardinals.
