I would suspect they reduced the salary by turning part of it into performance bonuses, that reduces the cap hit since the bonuses don't count against the cap. In return for this change some of the salary was either guaranteed or turned into roster bonus, which is effectively the same thing. That way the team gets a lower cap hit and Lewis more money up front and less impact on his financial situation if he gets cut.
