My guess is Gus was feeling a bit overwhelmed keeping tabs on everything. He's a defensive guy, not an offensive guy. Marrone may have been more of a quality control hire for the offense than just o-line. The reason I kinda buy into the asst head coach label is that when interviewed, I'm pretty sure Marrone said there could be circumstances where he gives Gus advice with in-game decisions, since he's got some experience with them himself.

 

I'm pretty sure Gus was asked if he would listen to said advice.... Can't remember what his response was though.
