Could the Jaguars trade Scobee? Ryan O thinks so. (Scobee Traded to steelers)

I hear people saying "he's only 33...that's not so old," but what they kind of overlook is that he started kicking here when he was 22. That's a long time for any player in any sport, and he has been showing signs of slowing down over the past two years. Granted the Steelers got themselves a Kicker who should remain a borderline top-10 Kicker for a couple more years, but this franchise simply has to think long-term. His contract is up next year, and the way free agency works he's going to command a contract that makes him the most expensive kicker in the game. I imagine the Steelers paying him something like $5 mil per from here on out.

Myers is 24 and has been working on his craft for a few years now since leaving college. Like Scobee he's a former soccer player who began kicking as a junior in high school (Scobee began kicking as a high school senior). Critics of the move point out that he was like 63 percent in college (Scobee was around 71 percent in college) afraid that he might not be much better, but look up Myers on Youtube and you'll see a darn accurate kicker. At the camp where the Jaguars found him he was kicking FGs from all distances, and in his two most recent camps he nailed 85 percent of them. From all accounts with the Jaguars, he's simply been gold.

Myers' one miss this preseason was from a mind-boggling 57 yards, and it was just a hair outside with plenty of leg. I notice that most of his kicks go near the top of the cross-bars, and I see room for even more improvement on accuracy should he follow a similar path to Josh. Early on with the Jaguars, Josh had a somewhat rocky season, but experts talked to him about controlling his depth. He realized that he could taper back on his shorter kicks not having to boot every one. Instead of kicking every kick near the top or over the cross bars, he started kicking them about mid-way up. He was literally nailing the middle of the square that the cross bars make with far more accuracy. Myers may learn this technique as well.

What really sold me on Myers was his sheer leg strength. Now Scobee still has one of the strongest legs in the league, but watching the two in camp on kickoffs you could see that Myers were consistently landing a little bit further. At the Kicking camp his kicks were landing about 3 yards deep into the endzone, but this preseason they've been going out of the endzone. This preseason I noticed one kicker (possibly with the Vikings) with an even stronger leg actually kicking FGs on his kickoffs, but Myers is not too far off from doing the same. Scobee holds the Jaguars' record at 59 yards, and the league record of 63 yards has been matched a few times. I can see Myers nailing a FG from 65 yards out.

I'm sure there's going to be somewhat of a learning curve for Myers as he adjusts to the league's rushers and antics, and that's really what this year is for. When you look at the schedule this year it's reasonable to think we're getting 6 to 8 wins, and maybe he does cost us a game putting us closer to the 6, but it's not like we're otherwise making the playoffs. Myers' developmental rookie season looks to be one more piece coming together for the Jaguars to have a stellar 2016 season. Instead of bemoaning Scobee's loss, let's embrace our new young strong-legged kicker and root for him. Doing so should make this season even more fun to watch. But remember, he's not Scobee...he's young...so please I beg of you... don't boo him if he misses one.
