My interpretation is that Kylo Ren has a great deal of raw talent with the Force--he is a Skywalker, after all--but lacks the patience or determination to develop it, instead wanting to just automatically be the best. When it became clear to him that the Light Side would take a lifetime to master, Snoke showed up tempting him with the quick ascent to power that the Dark Side offers, and that was enough by itself to win him over.

 

Basically, if Kylo Ren had a ship, it'd be called the Millennial Falcon.
