The runner or one of the pursuers could have plowed into him and injured him severely as he wasn't even looking at the play. Maybe it's different on the replay and I'll get a look at it sometime and change my mind.

I'm pretty sure I saw Tomlin peering back at the runner right before he was tackled. Maybe he was smirking because he realized that he nearly got run-over, but I don't think that there is anything constructive about it either.
