Close is a relative term. 1 astronomical unit (AU) is equivalent to the average distance of Earth from the sun, or about 93,000,000 miles. That's considered very, very close to astronomers.
As we stand right now, I'd say the Hubble space telescope could pick out our faint glow with long exposure times. An AU would be considered about as useful in measuring that distance as a tape measure from the Earth to the moon. In astrophysical terms, we suck. |
