:woot: Yeah, I've blocked that out of my memory apparently.  The undoing was really cleaning up the mess created by Gene Smith, although Harris wasn't exactly winning many fans around these parts when he was making the decisions.  Gene Smith found a way to drive down expectations from there after starting with a lot of hope.  He outwitted himself with his personnel prowess.

It didn't take a full season to dismantle anything.  That was completed in one off season.  However, the approach they took to rebuilding the roster, building through the draft, and not leaning heavily on big ticket free agency the first couple of years, prolonged the rebound somewhat, but in the end, it will hopefully bring the most rewards. 

 

It's because the front office didn't focus on finding free agents that would  placate the "WE NEED BIG NAMES" fans around these parts that they have the resources now to go get the guys who can be true difference makers.  They've reduced the number of holes this roster has not by throwing money at them, but by doing everything they can to draft well.  Instead of racing out and signing big ticket QBs or WRs, we've developed our own.  Teams are always going to have a need to go into free agency for talent at times, but if you draft well, the number of overpriced guys you're bringing in drops significantly.  It allows you to build a competitive team that can sustain their success beyond the next season or two, and that's really what this process is/was about from the start. 

 

I think this team was built using a new approach that suits a small market franchise quite well.  It's tough enough to compete with big market teams on the field, but even more difficult to do so if you're trying to go toe-to-toe with them in free agency.  The hope is that you become a team like Pittsburgh that has done a very good job of drafting for several years, and because of that, they don't have to dive into free agency extensively every year.  The guys who they lose to free agency usually have someone coming up behind them who is almost as good as the guys they've lost.  They continue to remain competitive.  That's what we should be hoping for in this market is a team that can afford to let some of their guys walk over time because they've done a good job of building the roster behind them.
