Actually, I think you've made a really good comparison here.  The talent infusion that the team got in the 1996 offseason is very comparable to what we see now.  1996 offseason added Natrone Means, Kevin Hardy, Tony Brackens, and Aaron Beasley.  Took a while for them all to gel, but they got there by midseason.

And I think that comparison helps us understand the team development process.  In 1995 the Jaguars were given double the normal amount of draft picks and an expansion draft.  That's almost three offseasons worth of improvement.  So it makes sense that it would take Dave and Gus 3 seasons to get to a point that Coughlin was able to reach in two seasons.
My fellow southpaw Mark Brunell will probably always be my favorite Jaguar.
