There's also nothing to lose.

There is possibly some potential gain. If you make a serious effort to identify the interim replacement, that guy has 12 games to earn the job. Maybe he succeeds. Maybe he doesn't. There's an unknown there that offers at least the opportunity to find the right replacement. I can tell you this much. Marrone was hired as an insurance policy. I'm not a huge fan of the guy, but when I look at how things have progressed under Gus, and the trajectory of the team so far this year, the team really has nothing to lose except maybe the first overall pick in the 2017 draft.
