This is exactly what happened with Charley. when it turned and it hit port Charlotte many took the media to the task for saying supposedly that a Tampa landfall was inevitable. While they said it was most likely, they put Port Charlotte under hurricane warning with at least 36 hours notice. Simply put, you just never know and if that storm is anywhere near you I always recommend preparing as if the worst will happen.
