I agree with having representation from each conference champion.  Regarding the extra game in an 8 team playoff, I'd suggest having the Quarterfinal the week 2 weeks after the conference champion games and having teams 1-4 host their game to reduce fan travel to 3 separate sites.  Each game (Conf Champtionship, Quarterfinal, SemiFinal, and Final) should be 2 weeks apart
