Not all of them had doubts about standing armies.   It was about half and half.  I know Hamilton and a lot of other people wanted a permanent professional army, while the people on the other side of the aisle were afraid of having a professional army.   There was quite a bit of debate about it. 

So, when you say, "the founders had their doubts about standing armies..." that is not entirely accurate.  Only some of them had doubts.  Others were strongly in favor.

And on the question of whether young people should join the military, I think a lot of young people benefit immensely from joining the military.
