That's not correct unless you're privy to the wording in his contract.  All indicators are that if the team was to cut him at some point over this suspension, they would have grounds to go after the portion of the signing bonus that has not yet been amortized.  What his intentions are at that point are completely irrelevant. The fact that he's not back is sufficient support for the team's claim. 

 

That's where I'm unfamiliar. By all accounts, the contract protects the team as you say, so my argument is somewhat based around speculation.

If it's written into his contract, and they opt to cut him regardless of his intentions, he's on the hook to reimburse the team.  Whether they collect it or not isn't really relevant.  They'll get the cap savings either way.

If Blackmon informs the Jags that he no longer wants to play, they can freeze his bank accounts and proceed immediately to demand reimbursement. If Blackmon doesn't inform the Jags, he gets to keep spending that money until the Jags finally decide to give up on him, which may buy him many months of access to the remains of the signing bonus.

actually there's been several articles, including ozone articles that have said that any money that wasn't guaranteed money can be recouped, but the process of recouping that money apparently is painstakingly long, in part, because he's likely already spent that money. 

 

He had clauses in his contract that has been mentioned plenty of times that says we don't pay him a dime if he has further violations, so we basically paid him for the games he was back last year and that was it.

My understanding is that it all money paid so far was fully guaranteed, but the suspension voids the salary guarantee going forward from that point in time. 

Like you said, we paid him for last year; we're off the hook for this year and 2015.

I misunderstood what they meant by offset language which would call for voiding guaranteed payments if he ultimately signs somewhere else. It's still not a standard package as this article explains since the guaranteed money is considerably delayed.

Wanting to play and being able to play are two very different things.  I'm sure he wants to play.  Is that desire strong enough to cause him to give up his old lifestyle? 

 

At this point, his problems may be so of out his control that he is unable to overcome them without professional help, if at all.
