PFF year end oline rankings

#21

Quote:I am shocked that they rated them that high, but I think having Blake throwing and the great runs towards the end of the season by shoelace helped them out...

maybe it was all Fisch's fault?
It appears you don't understand how thier evaluations work.

Quote:Think about it this way, PFF rated 14 teams WORSE than our O-line.  Our offensive line was far from middle of the pack.  Whatever criteria they are using should probably be supplemented by watching the games.  I watched all of the games, and there is no way in hockey sticks that half of the league had a worse offensive line.
But did you watch all of the games by the other teams?  People easily forget that things can be a lot worse.

Jake Matthews. Proving bloodlines mean nothing since '14.

Yes, this was his first full season, and he did come off a season ending injury last year which possibly impaired his off season strengthening. Those things are true, however, lets keep this in perspective;

*he isn't a 'true' rookie since he did get a taste of the NFL last season. So unlike Linder, he knew what to expect, which is an advantage.

*he was a high round draft pick! We're not talking about a 'walk on' or 7th round pick here; such a high pick is expected to produce at least average results as compared to veterans. He should be clearly better than other rookies, and he wasn't in either case. The expectation for him was obviously high since we traded another high draft pick that we had to get him...

*he had the benefit of playing by a veteran guard. Our RG and RT were both rookies.

I keep reading statements to the effect that the GM and HC are 'committed' to him. I can see why the GM would feel pressure to keep 'committed' to him since he traded 1st round draft pick Eugene Monroe to get him. Of course in all fairness, Monroe hasn't exactly taken over the world in Baltimore either. From what I've read not many of the linesmen from that particular draft have exactly turned anyone's head so far.

It seems fair to say the ball is in Joeckels court; if he shows real signs of coming around this coming season then good for him. If he continues to displayed a lack of strength and poor blocking skills compared to what the expectations were for him, he could turn into a backup or trade fodder.

Bowanko was far from great but played good for a rookie. I think he will be more consistent this year

Nah you were crazy when you said Matthews was better.

Quote:Receivers not getting separation and Blake not seeing them can't be blamed on the line. But i agree, this seems a bit high. He was instantly crushed way too often.

Is this a joke? You know you're line is really bad when you're QB is the leading rusher in several games and leads the league in sacks by 19 (Bortles/Henne 71, Kaepernick 52)

No rushing game except for a couple games and 70 sacks. There are teams worse than that?

I was thinking this as well..I don't know how they rate this, but it seems to not be accurate, except for the Joke analysis.  Everyone knew this though.

Allow me to explain the PFF rankings and why they show something different than what we all felt we saw.

The Jags O-line was simply Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde. I know I've used that term alot but its true and the numbers prove it. On one play, The O-line could screw up so bad Bortles gets sacked. On another play, They could completely stonewall the opposing defense. It was either sack or stonewall nearly every play. I rarely saw "near misses". Only "misses" and stonewalls.

That is why you see a decent rating. The O-line's good plays simply ranked them up despite the record number of bad plays.

Can't wait to see whats next.

I actually tend to agree with PFF on this. There were definitely plenty of faults w/ the oline, but I went back and looked at some of the games on my DVR and saw a whole lot of other symptoms as well. Blake held the ball too long frequently (he also did avoid a lot of pressure to be fair), a lot of scheming problems like asking Gerhart to single block JJ Watt, WRs that struggled to get open, an inordinate amount of forced passing situations due to long to-go situations or trailing on the scoreboard, etc.

I honestly think there is talent on this line to be passable given another offseason to grow up and grow together, plus the intrinsic benefits of Blake and the WRs becoming a year better and praying that we get a true receiving threat TE.

I can't agree that our O-line is in the middle of the pack.  Their compilation of grades and numbers can spit it out, but if that's a middle of the road offensive line performance, then I'm the queen of England.  I've watched enough football to recognize that it was a bad line.  It was probably the worst line in our history.  We set a record for most sacks allowed.  Our run game was pathetic most of the year.  Our QB's got massacred.  If that is average, then I'd hate to see poor.

One of these years.............
