The line is very bad, and if Caldwell thinks he can just plug in a new RT and it'll be fine, that's the sort of blunder that will cost him his job.
However, the sacks are honestly as much on Bortles as the O-line. He has no sense of the rush. He just stands in the pocket and pump fakes while defenders are barreling down at him, or he retreats from the pocket into even more defenders. His pocket presence is dreadful right now.

First quarter to first half in games he moves pretty well, but once he starts getting hit he quits on his pocket early. Dreadful is a strong word, but I think there is a trust issue there.
This is one of the worst lines in NFL history. I say draft another LT, slide Joeckel inside to LG, draft another C in the middle to late rounds, slide Pasztor inside to RG and move Linder outside to RT. Keep Bowanko Beadles as C/G depth.

Quote:How was Joeckel at RT last year? I can't remember those games...too drunk "Not overly great"
Bortles has been sacked 46 times in 11 games...46!!! You count the 15 times Henne was sacked in the first 2 games and the line has given up 60 sacks. The next closest QB has 40. I don't care what Boselli and Lags say. This line is atrocious. Tony could provide more protection if he put on pads tomorrow.
Quote:How was Joeckel at RT last year? I can't remember those games...too drunk Not very impressive. I think he's better suited to play guard if he adds some muscle. He's just not cut out to be an elite NFL left tackle. He reminds me of Robert Gallery - not a terrible player but just over-drafted and more effective inside than outside.

was it lageman that says he expects it to look mostly the same next year?
i sure hope not. no qb can be successful behind a line like that.
Coughlin when asked if winning will be a focus: "What the hell else is there? This is nice and dandy, but winning is what all this is about."

Quote:was it lageman that says he expects it to look mostly the same next year?I don't think Lageman knows his face from his dirt button. IIRC he was all gung ho that we would draft Aaron Murray and he had 0 clue about Bortles. I do not think he is privy to any personal information
It's not just the sacks (although they are bad enough). Bortles is constantly under pressure and has to rush every throw. Every game ! Nobody can operate well under that pressure and he's not going to learn much either, because everything is rushed or improvised. And we are creating nothing for runners through the middle.
Meanwhile the defense continues to perform miracles and keep us in games. Are we really going to draft players for the defensive line next spring, ahead of quality OLine players ?
If this O line is exactly the same next year you can expect the same number of victories. As soon as Bortles drops back, he has two guys in his face on nearly every play. Caldwell has done pretty well at identifying weaknesses so far. First he overhauled the secondary then he did the same thing with the D line. This offseason, I expect the overhaul to be focused on the O line and linebackers. Throw in a safety and this team could win a few games.

Good point about not being able to learn anything. He will never be able to truly scan the field and learn his timing routes if he is moved off of his position as soon as he finishes his drop back
Quote:was it lageman that says he expects it to look mostly the same next year? Competition and accountability... except at the weakest group on the team. There, we'll hand out starting jobs because they were draft picks.
Someone mentioned that the zone blocking system was also not doing our O-Line any favors... If anyone with more insight has some thought on switching back to a more up front man-blocking system, I'd love to hear it.

That's not Gus's fault though; Dave needs to address this offensive line in a b i g way this off season.Dave already addressed our line, he sent our #1 draft pick Left tackle to Baltimore for Jokel. How many sacks did Monroe give up today? That in a nutshell is your problem now, and has nothing to do with Gene Smith. The guy running it now is such a great talent evaluator he thought Jokel was better than Monroe. Look at those skinny arms! We still don't have a left tackle. Or a middle linebacker. He sent Darryl Smith away for JT Thomas for Christ's sake. What kind of Moron sends his 28 year old left tackle away for nothing? How can anyone defend that kind of stupidity? Sorry, I am signing off, enough blood pressure spike for one day.
When Bortles was in the shotgun the pocket was collapsing as the ball travelled to BB. When he was under center the pocket was collapsing with him as he backpedalled. Our o-line was just in the way of the Raven's defenders until they made contact then the Ravens had a clear shot at Blake.
Good grief, when you're getting beat that bad you MUST roll out, you MUST keep a fullback or two to help. It's better to only have 2 to 3 in routes and get the ball out than have 4 to 5 and take a sack. I noticed a couple times where we max protected and the ravens still got him. |
