I have a feeling we'll see Reynolds in there for first and second downs and expected running plays with Watson rotating in on pass rushing downs, but I'm cool with Reynolds starting.  When the staff feels Watson has more to offer they'll make the move.  I'm inclined to believe they'll make the right call. They went out of their way to bring in Watson. If they are starting LaRoy (an UDFA) ahead of him - you can bet your butt they have a good reason. 

 

There's a portion of Lageman's "Filmroom Friday" video which suggests you may be on the mark. Pretty impressive play by Watson as the Otto on 3rd down beating 2 men for the sack.

 

Just as an fyi - the clip also has a nice breakdown of Ryan Davis doing some pretty impressive things, and also a reminder of Mike Brown's value to this team as a versatile special teamer. It's worth watching.

As far as calling it a "good problem to have," well, don't tell Russell Allen that. If he did not have to retire, I don't think we would have tried to get Watson.

I disagree. Allen wasn't really a pass rusher, and that's clearly something they were looking for in an Otto.

Just as an aside, how great is it that we're finding UDFAs that are contributing? Hurns, Reynolds, Mike Brown... Some solid guys and (in the case of Hurns and possibly Reynolds) with the chance to make an impact on our team long term. Such a great feeling.

To me, Reynolds is a more physical player, while Watson is a faster player and a better blitzer/pass rusher.

 

I think had Watson not been hurt, he would be the starter, but I have to credit Reynolds for making the most of his opportunity.

 

If Watson continues to make plays rushing the passer, eventually he'll get more playing time at Reynolds' expense.

 

LaRoy Reynolds was one of the Jaguars Defensive players that jumped out for me in the two middle pre-season games,  the two Jaguars pre-season games that I watched.    Mostly because of what you touched on,   his physical play.  

 

Also,  Reynolds seemed like he displayed a nose for the ball.   

 

He certainly looked like an NFL caliber LB and someone that has the type of skills that usually translates well to Special Teams.
