I just think that if they liked him, there shouldn't be any indecision based on other teams' interest. Either they feel he can play/ develop into something good or they don't. 

 

They allegedly were ready to cut him until other teams called and then, indecision...

 

The plan was to put him on the PS, which sort of proves the bold.

 

But continue to try and find something to complain about.

They thought Shateley had potential so marked him for practice squad

They sent the cut list out early to get trade offers like last year with seattle and d'anthony smith

They had interest in shately which didn't match their valuation also meaning it was unlikely he would make waivers


The position coach was adamant they keep him around

They rearranged the roster to accommodate


Seems all too logical to me

I think caldwell finally got caught with his hands on his seat and didn't know what he had with Shatley. Or atleast his value/perception. I give caldwell credit however for not digging into the ground against Gus/Luke and getting up to speed real quick. Instead of losing a player to pride or ignorance, He handled it perfectly and now still has said player.

 

I suspect a good learning experience for our new GM .

Sitting on one's hands means you did nothing.


The team was going to waive him and likely place him on the PS.


They got wind he could be claimed, so they decided not to waive him.


Still not clear how this is trying to be spun as a negative.

Here's another thought.....  Caldwell announces his intention to release Shatley ahead of time in order to gauge interest in Shatley .  He saw he wasn't going to clear waivers..... so he pulls him back. All part of the plan.

For most RB's coming from the college level,  their greatest adjustment is picking up blitzes on the NFL level.   If a lower round pick or UDRFA doesn't make enough progress in this facet of play in training camp and the pre-season,  even getting a Practice Squad opportunity in his rookie season is an uphill battle.   

 

One related thought,  as it applies to Toby Gerhart.    For a number of years,  Gerhert played in place of Adrian Peterson on 3rd down expected passing situations not only because Gerhart is the better receiver.   He's also better at pass pro than Peterson.  The latter improved in pass pro but I doubt he's on Gerhart's pass pro level.   Gerhart is the type of RB that can be an asset in any down and distance situation.
