If the Jaguars won the Superbowl would you still be a fan?

I know that it sounds crazy

I can't believe that you actually went on to type for another 20 minutes after stating the above.

What the heck, OP? No, I hate winning. I despise not being berated for loving the Jags. More terrible seasons, please!

We don't need to win the Superbowl to get to the arrogant fan level. All you have to do is make a quirky post that may only make sense to you, and their arrogant post will pile one upon another to the point of making sure you feel like you are alone. I liken piling on to group bullying with the "popular" people.

I may not understand your pov, but it is your pov, not mine. I can respect, and appreciate that it isn't meant to be hurtful, or derogatory.

Don't let yourself be silenced. Not everyone looks down their nose to gaze upon their fellow fans in unison. Just be sure, we shall stand against those bandwagon fans together when we win the SB. If there are none others to join us at our victory party, it will be just you & I.

just when I think the threads couldn't get any dumber...

I should have learned by now not to be surprised.

This thread is inspired by all those Seahawks fans thankfully leaping off the bandwagon I suppose.

When I think about the Jags winning the Super Bowl one day, not a single negative thought comes to mind. But, that's just me...

Ever think it may be the angle you view threads from? Or, are you possibly being one of those weak heals about it?

I know that it sounds crazy but one of the reasons why I think any of us even follow a team like the Jaguars is because we're all waiting for that one moment where our patience for the many years of enduring back to back losing seasons, disappointing draft picks (Gabbert, Harvey.), and poor management/coaching (Shack Harris, Gene Smith, JDR, and Mularkey) finally pays off by seeing our team one day in the not so distant future raise the Lombardi Trophy and having our franchise QB say: "I'M GOING TO DISNEYWORLD!"

But have any of you ever thought about the consequences (Both positive and negative.) of the Jags winning a Superbowl? One thing that would almost certainly happen to this team is an increasing fanbase due to the number of fairweather and bandwagon fans who would suddenly identify themselves with this team. Despite the fact that many of these people who are Jaguar "Fans" probably never originally supported the team to begin with. Have no connections to Jacksonville or Florida in general. And probably don't have any respect for the true diehard fans like us that are on this forum and how we had to live through all of the miserable seasons and terrible management prior to this Superbowl win.

Increasing media exposure and press coverage would focus more of their attention on the city and bring to light some of the more negative aspects of the city. (Which can be interpreted as being either good or bad for the city.)

To me, I have never thought of us as being just a "Fanbase" but more like a "Fraternity". And if we suddenly had an inflating fanbase it would take away that sense of "Brotherhood/Sisterhood" for us due to our quark sized fanbase. And a horde of new fans suddenly aligning themselves with the team would take away that sense of "We're all in this together."

On the other hand, a Superbowl win would be good from a business perspective due to more TV deals, merchandise sales, and higher ticket prices. The city would find itself in a much more competitive position to host other sporting events and other non-sporting events due to an increased marketing campaign.

Teams like New England and New Orleans had to endure some brutal years before their teams eventually became winners. And when they both finally won a Super Bowl/s it really seemed like their originally core and loyal fanbases from the beginning were suddenly replaced by an arrogant, and self-entitled group of new fans who had never endured the earlier crucibles.

If the Jaguars were to suddenly, and abruptly win the Superbowl this year it would without a doubt be one of, if not the, greatest turnaround in not only the NFL, but the entire history of sports IMO. On the other hand, it would also be bittersweet for a number of reasons as well.

I'm certain that a lot of you reading this thread will have a number of different opinions, beliefs, and perspectives about the idea, and this is why I think that it is important that we as fans should ask ourselves these questions first.

I look forward to reading your opinions.

No way would I be a fan.  That'd be the last straw for me.  I can't believe anyone in their right minds would be a fan of a team after a Super Bowl.

This is not even close to the dumbest post ever; probably not even for this month.

I think I understand where the OP is coming from. Some who post on here certainly give off a vibe of enjoying the "us against the world" and the "I was a Jaguar fan before it was cool." And many would no longer feel abused by the national media. What would some people have to whine about?

My only concern with sustained success, assuming it happens in my lifetime, would be the cost increase associated with winning. I've been able to hang on as an original STH through thick and a lot of thin. If costs for a season ticket go up due to demand it would be a nice problem for the Jags bottom line, but a real problem for me and I suspect many others.

But - we'll deal with all that when and if we get there. I just want to feel that edge, that tightness in your gut before a big game. You know, a game that matters. It's been a long time coming.

It's better than a good bowl.

First, I think we will ALWAYS be abused by the national media.  Even if we win the Super Bowl, they will say something to the effect it was the least interesting Super Bowl...yada yada yada.

Yeah...there seems to be plenty here who take pleasure in being "under the radar."

I don't.  Being under the radar means people aren't paying attention, and that's usually the case when you are bad.

I have been fortunate enough to make my 20th year as a STH, and a raise in ticket prices due to demand because we somehow won back to back Super Bowls would make my tickets more expensive.  But, if it somehow got too expensive for me to go under those circumstances, I could take solace in the fact we'd be a much healthier, more stable franchise.  Blackout talk would disappear from the lexicon once and for all.  The team will have the clout and good will enough to build a new stadium.  The networks wouldn't make the predictable cut to break or intervew of someone else when we are on the clock during draft day.  Have all kinds of prime time games....and have those big shiny trophies in our trophy case.

Worst to 1st.  Curse Reversed!

Of course I would still be a fan.

But you did bring to light something that I've given thought to before. There is something appealing about sharing an NFL team amongst the true ~600k Jacksonvillians. Unlike in New York, where I'd imagine you don't really get the same kind of connection to the Giants organization, because there are about 3M other Giants fans. The intimacy between the Jaguars and its fans is something special, but given that I am still all for the Jaguars footprint growing.
