It is about time.  I am so sick of the NFL being the moral police.  If players want to do recreational drugs monday - friday idc as long as they are going to help the Jaguars win football games.

Do you really think even that nobody is using just because they are testing anyways? Steroids and hgh can be used safely when not abused same as any other drug.

Performance enhancers should be banned, which includes cocaine. As far as weed I really couldn't care less if the players smoke or not. Most of them already do, so why not just make it legal?

I'm very certain that many are using. Being 6'4'' and 260 lbs with (probably) <5% body fat (Vernon Gholston) is almost impossible without aid. People can't maintain that much muscle mass with such a low quantity of fat without the stuff. That goes for most of the huge / low fat athletes. It isn't about the work. It's about the work and the perfect cycle.

I don't disagree about the last part of your post. I'm just curious if he would draw a line in the sand since those two are directly related to performance.

I'm sure an argument, maybe not a great one, can be made that weed could be use to increase performance. Maybe a smaller OL is looking to gain weight and uses it to increase appetite? That argument can go for anyone, too. How many times do we hear how players put on some weight and expect better results in the upcoming season? I think the NFL's punishments should be less severe, but I understand their argument against it.

Great, Now THEY'LL be playing their games on madden too while stuffing their faces full of cupcakes and chicken wings. Then we can just watch the superbowl via video game.

Have you seen the video of Prince Fielder eating a fan's nachos while waiting in the on-deck circle?

Good luck.

Anyway, I'm not sure why you have "medicinal" in parentheses, the NFLPA's desire to study the effects of medical marijuana is really a side subject of the article. This is instead a recognition by the NFL that marijuana use is not as harmful as the other substances that get players in trouble. It also seems like they recognize the inevitability of use by many players. They are changing the threshold, meaning how much THC must be detected to "fail" a test. That must mean that a certain amount detected is ok.

It's a remarkable development.

So far it has.

The reason why I put medicinal in parentheses is the same reason I could have used HGH as another example which was to raise the question, has the NFL evolved to the point where they can test certain substances and come to the conclusion they will not harm the player's health like marijuana?

That is your great argument for weed being a performance enhancing drug?  Munchies?  I'm assuming this is a sarcastic post.

Dude, read the post. I even said it wasn't a great argument. My point is that the NFL has to limit the permitted drug-use to keep the playing field level. Besides, it isn't as though having the munchies would be the only benefit to smoking. Mark Stepnoski said he preferred smoking weed over taking pain killers. Athletes all across the spectrum rave about the benefits of smoking. The NFL is about structure. If they permit this, then there's going to be the same argument about other drugs.

Lessen the punishment, keep it banned in the NFL.

It isn't performance enhancing though. It's comical that you are trying to make an argument saying it is.

I don't think it's about the NFL being the moral police in this case. They have a substance banned that is illegal. Not sure how they're being moral police there.

Exactly. It's got absolutely nothing to do with morality.  It's about the legality.

lots of big time weight lifters use refer ask Arnold. not quite sure why, but I think it has to do with recovery between work outs. I did competitive lifting in off season in college and all of the guys on roids smoked. I don't think there are any studies on the matter, but its known about in the body building and lifting worlds.

And cause I was a gazillionaire, and I liked doin it so much, I cut that grass for free.

Quote:It's all about politics.
The NFL has become a political organization in doing its best to be as politically correct as possible even on issues like this that aren't necessarily ripe for policy changes. Only two states have legalized marijuana, and the rest of the country is watching the experiment unfold for better or worse.

It doesn't directly increase the size or speed of an athlete, but there are definitely benefits to athletes.

I would love to see your performance enhancing list on weed.  I'm sure I could make a better case for caffeine.

It does present an interesting situation for players on the Seahawks and Broncos rosters. They are banned from using a substance that is legal in their states.
