If we don't take a Qb in the first, which Rookie QB do we take later?

Granted, this link only covers one week, but I just don't see the benefit in drafting another project QB to develop when one is already on the roster and has had a full year with the system. I'm not saying Matt Scott is the answer, but I am shying away from the lackluster options at QB after the first round.
They arent lackluster. They are all accomplished QBs. Matt Scott's career in college doesnt even compare to most of these late round QBs this year.

He didn't. He was garbage.

Aaron Murray in the 4th

can get rocked but he has solid pocket presence good accuracy and puts nice zip on the ball not a mobile guy but there is certainly potential and value there as the ACL has caused him to fall

David fales in the 5th guy has the pocket presence and the mental game to start in the nfl level of competition concerns and size/ arm strength concerns are causing him to drop but under 20 yards only teddy has better accuracy and ball placement

I'd be willing to say there are 10 or more QBs I'd rather have from this draft class than Matt Scott.
Something we agree on. Don't understand all the love for Matt Scott.

In looking at last years draft (QBs slipping), I'd love to get Bridgewater or Manziel in the 2nd.  Bortles will be gone for sure but one of the others could slip.

I really like Garopollo a lot.  I would also be interested in Shaw way late.

It's funny, I think just the opposite actually. I honestly see Bortles going number 1 to the Texans or he drops to the 2nd.

In contrast, there are a numbers of teams right past number 3(if Texans and JAgs both pass) that will eat up Manziel and Bridgewater if they fall, including Browns, Raiders, and Vikings. No way all three of those teams pass on them IMO.

And call me crazy hurricane, but I still have the idea that if somehow Manziel does indeed drop, that Jerry Jones will be Jerry Jones and take him when the Cowboys turn comes around, and if not him then Chip Kelly(who is almost as crazy as Jerry) will snatch him up. No way Manziel makes if out of the first. Not with Jerry and Chip sitting down there IMO.

I want 3 players. Clowney, Bridgewater, Manziel. Jaguars have the number 3 pick. Just give me one of those 3 at 3, and I'm happy.

I think Chip Kelly is happy with Foles. There is no way they get a QB first this year

I tried to stress the "crazy" as much as i could in my last post. I agree, Manziel would not fit into either the cowboys or the eagles current situation/rebuilding process. But then again I'm not talking about completely sane/orthodox coaches and owners.

Quote:Brett Smith plz, and to a little lesser extent Fales. They would be my 3rd round targets (I don't want any QB at 39, no good values there). Logan Thomas or Tom Savage too if they are available day 3.

KY, have you watched any of Garrett Gilbert? I'd be interested in your opinion on him.

I could see Cowboys going Manziel, but not Eagles

Pro skill set, good pro day. May have worked himself up the draft board, but hard to tell (thinking around late 4th). Savage would still be my 5-7 sleeper, kid has a cannon.

I like what I've read about him as well. Never seen him play though.

What are you looking for with your late round QB?  Are you looking for a guy who will be a great teammate, will be able help the starter as he dissects plays from the sideline, and is competent enough to hold down the fort for a few games while the injured starter rehabs injury?  Or are you looking for a guy who has the long term potential to develop into an above average starting QB?

If the former, I think a guy like Aaron Murray or Connor Shaw.  A great team player.  Will work hard.  Good enough to win a few games in the right scheme designed to hide their flaws.  I dont believe either of them are good enough to develop into an above average QB.  Just dont have the physical skills.  And they have enough experience where I think the upside is limited.

If the latter, I like Tom Savage.  Obviously very raw and has his weaknesses.  Didnt handle the rush well at times and took too many sacks.  But has limited game experience due to the transfer rule so lots of room to get better.  He was freshman of the year in the Big East and then basically didnt play for 3 seasons.  He may as well have been a freshman all over again last year.  So he definitely has potential for growth and development.  From a physical standpoint, has the big time arm you want.  In watching 5 minutes of his highlights I saw more big time NFL throws than Ive seen watching hours of Bortles, Bridgewater, and Manziel combined.  He has the skillset.  He just needs experience and coaching.  Will he develop into a top 10 or top 15 NFL QB?  Probably not.  But odds are nobody drafted after the 2nd round will be.

I didnt mention Garop.  I'm definitely intrigued by him but didnt list him cuz I think he'll be gone in the 2nd.  I dont think of him as a late round QB.  I liked what I saw at the East/West and Senior Bowl.  I keep reading that he flinches at phantom pressure so thats obviously a big concern.  Not sure the validity of that though.  If true, I'd want to stay away.  At least stay away early in the 2nd.  If he was sitting there in the 4th I wouldnt think twice about taking him... phantom pressure or not.

McCarron in the 3rd

Murray in the 4th

Connor Shaw in the 7th

These would be my 3 possibilities. Garrapalo in the 2nd may also be an option, but I haven't seen enough of him and would be concerned about his level of competition and whether he flinches in the pocket, as has been brought up by some. Would hate to waste a 2nd rounder, which is a premium pick, on a potential bust. I trust Caldwell, however, to make the correct choice and he and Bradley got to see a lot of him at the Senior Bowl.

Garoppolo, McCarron, Murray, Mettenberger, Savage and Fales are all viable candidates.

Im on board here in this order, except for Fales. Dont like the way his passes seem to float on air when throwing deep.

4.Garoppolo,2. McCarron, 5.Murray, 1.Mettenberger,3. Savage

I have a little but not enough to give a real evaluation. However, one of the guys I talk to about draft stuff a lot is an SMU alum that has watched every game of him and he about fell over laughing when Gil Brandt suggested he could sneak into day 2. He has size, a pretty good arm, and some decent athleticism...but he's not even close to being a QB yet. Logan Thomas lite lite from a tools set, and not even as advanced as Logan from a skills standpoint. He should be a 7th round/UDFA prospect flier based on his tools alone, but nothing more.
