Gibson.com’s Top Guitar Solos of All Time
|
Can't argue with any of them. Kinda surprised by the absence of Les Paul or Chet Atkins.
I'll add some more obscure ones: "Lunatic Fringe" - Red Rider. Awesome slide guitar "Tom Sawyer" - Rush. Perhaps Alex Lifeson's best solo. Maybe Peart's best drum fill, too. "High Landrons" - Eric Johnson. Hadn't heard him? Maybe you should "Fight the Good Fight" - Triumph. Not their best song, but probably Rik Emmett's best solo "You Got that Right" - Lynnrd Skynnrd. Great Band, on the list with Freebird "Fantasy Girl" - .38 Special. Incredible singing, too. Jax's own Jeff Carlisi continues to be ignored. "Electric Eye" - Judas Priest. Not incredibly complex, just sounds right "Wasted Years" - Iron Maiden. The solo is but one of the incredible guitar works in this song Edit: Forgot "Stone in Love" by Journey. If you love "Don't Stop Believing", check this one out. Schon is completely underrated. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Quote:I think these guys have amazing guitar solos! one of my favorites right now. Its okay, the guitar work and drums are good but the vocals are terrible. That vocal sound is so played out, you'd think it would have went away by now...
Quote: 1. disagree. Love Rush, as well you know, but I think the solo in Freewill beats Tom Sawyer. Heck, I think many other solos from Lifeson are better than the Tom Sawyer one, and the TS solo is really good. 2. Agree. 3. Meh, while I agree Schon is good and probably underrated, I've never heard a Journey solo that really made me care either way. Good band, good songs for the most part, just a lack of anything really great "solo-wise". 4. Disappointed that you left out Trevor Rabin from your list. His solo on "Owner of a Lonely Heart" probably should not only have made your list, but probably the top 50 from the other list, too. Quote:Its okay, the guitar work and drums are good but the vocals are terrible. That vocal sound is so played out, you'd think it would have went away by now... I'll chalk it up to an age thing, I love FFDP vocals, great band! Quote:Oooo. Good one. Not sure where it fits on the list - but it's a good one! We show less advertisements to registered users. Quote:I'll chalk it up to an age thing, I love FFDP vocals, great band! I dunno, FFDP aren't the only band that has that similar vocal sound. Lots of bands have had it for what seems like 10-15 years now. As said, I'd have thought the trend would have went away by now. "Growling" is lame. Other than that though, I think their music is good.
Quote:3. Meh, while I agree Schon is good and probably underrated, I've never heard a Journey solo that really made me care either way. Good band, good songs for the most part, just a lack of anything really great "solo-wise".3. Guitar solo begins at 2:27 Some great bass work by Ross Valory, if you listen carefully, too. I'm not Journey's biggest fan by any means, but it's an incredible 2 minutes 4. I prefer Steve Howe's guitar work in Yes. I do like Rabin's solo in "It Can Happen". I had to draw the line somewhere, and I didn't even get into all my favorite genres. John Denver in "Darcy Farrow". Bob Mould's "See a Little Light". Men at Work's "Overkill". Getting back to the list, I'm impressed that Gibson listed so many artists that used the competition's instruments. Quote:I don't see how there's no Dimebag(Pantera) in the top 20. If I had to pick a greatest guitar player of all time, it would probably be him.Well after looking at the entire list 1-50, and seeing that there isn't one mention of Dime, that's pretty pathetic.
60% of the time, It works Everytime...

I'm a little surprised that Eric Johnson's Cliffs of Dover didn't make the list. Granted, that's really more of an entire song than a solo, but I've always enjoyed listening to that piece of music.
I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

Quote:No Randy Rhoads either, IIRC.... 17. “Mr Crowley,” Ozzy Osbourne (Randy Rhoads) Read the entire list next time ![]()
Quote:3. Guitar solo begins at 2:27 3. I know the song...I just don't find the solo in Stone In Love all that impressive. It sounds CC Deville-ish towards the latter part. 4. Thats interesting...what is it that you like on the "It Can Happen" solo? I find that solo rather plain - certainly not up to Rabin's top works such as the aforementioned Owner of A Lonely Heart....even Rabin's solo in "Something to hold Onto" I'd put above the one on "it can Happen".
Quote:17. “Mr Crowley,” Ozzy Osbourne (Randy Rhoads) Yes, he's actually there, 2x - my bad. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Instead of having so many repeats and threepeats in the case of Hendrix/ Page....they should have included Dime/ Rabin/ Lifeson/ Bratta/ Bettencourt
The list is also missing Reb Beach & George Lynch, of which you could certainly find at least one top 50 worthy representation for this list.
Quote:3. Guitar solo begins at 2:27 Workbook is a great album. My fav song is brascila crossed w Trenton. Pretty decent solo on that song you mentioned tho.

I like a good guitar solo. However, my appreciation of the blues has taught me that a good blues guitarist can put these white boys to shame.
Quote:I like a good guitar solo. However, my appreciation of the blues has taught me that a good blues guitarist can put these white boys to shame. Not going to argue that point....as a matter of fact, its been said on an occasion or 2 that Jimmy Page, who's seen as one of the better guitarists, pretty much ripped off a lot of the old time blues riffs for several of the Zeppelin tunes...
Quote:I like a good guitar solo. However, my appreciation of the blues has taught me that a good blues guitarist can put these white boys to shame. Its also too bad that black youth of today (and white youth too, for that matter) really don't appreciate some of the legendary black musicians as Hendrix or the or the classic Blues players....they'd rather instead look up to the little talent gangsta thug druggie rap stars instead. |
