Gibson.com’s Top Guitar Solos of All Time

Gibson.com’s Top Guitar Solos of All Time

What makes for a great guitar solo? Is it mind-melting precision or bone-chilling soul? Is it the way it can leave you slack-jawed, wondering, “How did he do that?” Or is it something that you can sing from memory, a melodic passage that weaves itself into the DNA of the song? Or are the greatest solos ever played the ones that somehow manage to do all of the above?

Gibson.com is on a mission to find out, so we polled a panel of rock and roll experts (Gibson editorial staff and writers, some of our favorite musicians and, most importantly, our fans), asking for everyone to name the greatest guitar solos in music history. Through the course of the week, we’ve revealed #50-41, #40-31, #30-21 and #20-11.

Without further ado, we are thrilled to present the Top 10 Guitar Solos of All Time:

Different generations will have differing opinions on this one. It is a shame the guitar solo has basically died with today's genre of music.

I think Knopfler at #20 should be a bit higher.  And there oughta be some Alex Lifeson in there around #25-35 or so.   Good list, though!!

Seriously.

I don't see how there's no Dimebag(Pantera) in the top 20. If I had to pick a greatest guitar player of all time, it would probably be him.

There are obviously some really good choices on the list though.

Also agree on Lifeson. One guy that I am not surprised that got slighted but shouldn't have is Lindsay Buckingham. The guy is a phenomenal guitar player, but has never gotten the accolades for it.

What lies behind us, and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.

Based on that top ten list, Comfortably Numb should be #1 in my opinion.

Thats actually a good point. I am a fan of Buckingham as well.

Not to mention Alex Lifeson.

Also conspicuously absent on that list is Ted Nugent.

Well, its hard work & generally takes a long time to learn the guitar well enough that you can play really well, so its not surprising to me at all that the guitar solo has died with today genrbage of music.

Maybe with what is on the radio. There is plenty of great music by talented musicians in this generation. They just don't get the radio play because the record companies are more interested in making money than music.
