Poll: I think picking Howard at #4 overall is..
It's a good pick. Howard is an elite prospect. He'll be a game changer.
It's an unconventional pick because TEs aren't valued that high, but I like it anyway.
I don't see the value, but he's an intriguing prospect so I'll give it a chance before judging harshly.
Seems like a misstep by the F.O. Better value could have been had. I'm very skeptical.
What the hell were they thinking? This kid better be Gonzalez level quickly.

Thoughts on TE- Howard at #4 (poll)

#21

Quote:Why would the FO even think about drafting a TE at #4 if we don't have a QB to pass to him?  While I believe OJ Howard has extreme talent and the need for a productive TE is very high, it makes no sense to draft him if we still are unsure about whether Bortles will be able to become a serviceable QB in this league.  Give him a RB and an OLine and let's see how he does.  Draft a TE in the 2-5 range.

Because the FO wants good players. Using your reasoning, teams would spend every pick on a QB until they find a good one. Draft the elite player now so he is on your team, then fix the QB position when the time comes for it to be fixed.

There's no doubt in my mind this guy would light it up.

I see a lot to like.

Especially his hands and apparent lack of fear.

This guy is big, fast, has soft hands, is physical, has moves, gets open, blocks well, hell...he even looks comfortable taking a shovel pass.

I'm down...draft him please

So far:

positive votes - 12

wait and see / on the fence  - 16

negative votes -  18

The funny aka sad thing about that is that I would bet more than half of the 18 negative votes are openly stumping for Fournette.

The even sadder thing is that you feel the need to interject Fournette into most draft related topics even when no one else is talking about him.

You're right, comparing and contrasting other options to the guy who is being propped up as the main option by the vast majority at the moment is somehow out of place.

Maybe if you were  actually comparing and contrasting.

Sounds more like just plain ol salt to me.

If Fournette is the favored pick among mockers and Jag fans at the moment (like you claim), then of course many of those not in favor of Howard would want Fournette.

Obvious, no?

This is not comparing and contrasting. Mostly you just trying to downplay others opinions because they don't match what you've read on twitter.

Yes, which is what makes it funny since most of the reasoning is that TE at 4 is untenable while stumping for RB at 4. That's the ironic positional value comparison I was pointing out.

Anyway. I believe while Howard is a great prospect, him at #4 would be a reach. Not solely because of position played but mostly because I don't believe he is head and shoulders above than a guy we could get at the top of the 2nd.

KY is going to have a mental breakdown if Thomas is on the board and the Jags take Fournette.

Or maybe it's because I'm not relying totally on what I read like so many others that copy/paste a scouting report and go "See Bo Jackson and Adrian Peterson!"

Lol that's literally what you do. Your main source however is random people on twitter.

Oh please, it would just be another first round miss to throw on the pile of the other misses. Just because it would be dumb doesn't mean I'm not fully prepared for it.

I think any receiving position shouldn't be taken in the top 5. Unless they have a combination of Calvin Johnsons character/physicality/talent.

But a WR's or TE's ratio of Impact is lower compared to a HB or obviously QB. Depending on the personell package a Receiver will have a 1/3 chance of making an impact or in some other packages a 1/5 chance. Whereas a starting running back is going to constantly have a 1/2 chance of touching the ball if he's on the field.

Good points but longevity plays a factor too. A TE can be effective into his mid 30s whereas a RB usually falls off before he's even 30.

Which is why the Cowboys will start feeling the effects of picking Elliot over Ramsey starting this year.

Elliott is very good but the Cowboys corners are absolutely dreadful now.

I think they already felt it in the playoffs.

Yep, been making the same argument for months now. That .2 yards Elliott got them over their already top 5 2015 YPC was not worth the opportunity cost of a great CB or DL, which Buckner is and they also really need.
