Pass rusher at #5?

#21

Quote: I acknowledged it was a possibility and that people shouldn't discount it as people on this forum did not realize the level prospect Buckner was. I didn't consider Spence a possibility because of his off-field but if that's behind him he is a far better get.
Buckner is a pure 5 tech, through and through. He is not a pass rusher and the chances that he'll ever be a pass rusher is slim to none. He'll get bullied around all game long if he tries to play on the inside at the next level. Unless he does some serious, serious work to improve on getting his pad level down.

People complained about Odrick during the season, that we paid him that kind of money to be a 5 tech, who doesn't make splash plays. Could you imagine the outcry if they drafted another Big End at #5 overall, to be a back up... And, he would be a back up Big End, drafted #5 overall. That's exactly what he would be for at least 2 years in this scheme. A 5th overall pick, to play behind Odrick and Alualu at the 5 tech.

I personally believe there's absolutely zero chance we draft Buckner. Yes, we have a need on the DL, but we don't have a need on the DL at the position he would play. He isn't a NT. He isn't a 3 tech and he sure as heck isn't a LEO. So, other than a 5 tech in this current scheme, where would he line up?

Spence or bust for some people I guess.

Ramsey or bust for some people I guess.

Me? I'm cool with Ramsey, Spence, Bosa or Jack. FA will give us a much clearer understanding of who we will take.
Right. I'm not even saying I don't like Spence's potential, but to suggest they're stupid for not selecting him, especially considering the risk, is pretty ballsy.

Quote:The "too good to pass up" mentality is how you end up with Tyson Alualu and Bryan Anger on your team.

I'd certainly prefer to see a defensive back drafted, but if a mid-tier pass rusher is all the Jaguars are able to get and a guy like Bosa is there at five, yeah, you'd have to at least have a long talk about which has a greater effect on the other: the pass rush or the secondary.
Not to mention Blaine Gabbert and Justin "Cheech and Chong" Blackmon

I don't really hold Gabbert against Gene, honestly. Everybody and their mother was saying that he was a sure thing, and plenty of "analysts" blasted the Panthers for taking Newton over him.

Blackmon's a different story.

One thing I recall is Nolan Nawrocki rated Blaine Gabbert as the top QB prospect in the 2011 Draft.

There was more than one.

And several were blown away by his pro day as well.

Yes, but Nawrocki was dismissing Newton because Cam has "a fake smile". Not the first time he's invented a reason to crap on a black QB.

From a physical talent standpoint,  it's easy to see why Blaine Gabbert was ranked very high.  The NFL Lockout,  combined with him starting early in his career on a team that didn't have enough talent,  likely contributed to Gabbert being a huge disappointment as a prospect.

Even taking Cam Newton out of the equation,  Nolan Nawrocki still had Blaine Gabbert as a top 10 prospect.  Gabbert was clearly one of Nawrocki's biggest misses from the standpoint of a player not panning out the way he expected.

What should have scared everyone was his horrific pass completion percentage in a pass happy, quick passing game.  How that was missed is beyond me.....I want to punch myself in the face when I think of having to watch Gabb's live week in and week out.

The biggest problem with both picks is the Gene traded up to get those flops.  Blaine by himselft not a great pick but giving up a 2nd, which turned out to be Rob Gronkoski, is horrible.

Buckner isn't a pass rusher but he had 11 sacks. Ok.

He doesn't project well as a pass rusher in the NFL.

This, Buckner is probably the only guy out of the top defensive players I wouldnt be happy with at 5

So that means we're probably picking him.

I also think Dave will go hard after someone to compliment/rotate with Fowler in free agency.

But if they are bent on pass rusher in the first it's looking like a trade up for Bosa or a trade down for whoever is left that they like.

Lawson, Spence, Bullard, or Dodd I suppose.

Implying Bosa goes top 4
