I was about to say on a positive we didn't waste a time out this week. Then I remembered the catch in bounds we challenged Sad

Quote:My biggest problem with Gus is that this team has zero identity. At the beginning of training camp he proclaimed they would be a run heavy offense to alleviate Blakes responsibility. They've clearly abondoned that thought. They have no identity on defense. And no one shines on special teams. Basically the jags done have one area that they do really really well. If they had that it would make things easier to pinpoint what to fix. But every week all phases seem to regress.

I wouldn't say "zero identity." On offense they're clearly a passing team with a knack for the deep pass. That's a very distinct identity. Defensively we're clearly one of those bend and break defenses.

I guess you maybe right. They really need that running game to be a consistent passing threat. It could be scary good if they would just force the run game to be established.

I think we're getting closer in the run game. TJ was just starting to really look good then had his groin injury and missed the last game. Even if he does play next week that groin injury will probably hinder him for a while so that's a big set-back, but at some point I see him coming on stronger. If only TJ can get some consistent blocking up front they could really do some damage on the ground because it seems like most of the holes he's getting are slight gaps in the defense he's managing to find and squeeze through. Rarely have we seen examples of well blocked plays where he can just take advantage. I miss the days when we had guys like Manuwai, Naeole and Uche up front making it easy for the RBs to reach the second level.

Quote:I listened to Mike Dempsey's show and Lagemen had a great segment assessing the play of the Jaguars. One thing that really struck me is there were a bunch of questions that basically went along the lines of "if the coaches knew that then why didn't they do it" or "why wasn't this player coached or assigned to do X".

Three examples that immediately came to mind:
  • After House had 3 great quarters, why did the coaching staff feel the need to continue risking leaving House on and Island with one of the league's premier WRs (Hopkins). Who else on the Texans team should our defense have been afraid of? Cecil Shorts?
  • Why aren't our players coached to play more physically and diagnose basic routes? Example...Arian Foster ran a very basic route concept, "Texas" and Cyprien had man coverage. At no point did Cyprien come up and make contact with Foster. He gave him a completely free run, which he reacted badly too. Is the coaching staff not responsible for teaching such basic concepts?
  • Davis not starting LEO because of special teams duties...is Gus really [BAD WORD REMOVED] serious?

There were other examples but it just feels like this team is always reacting and not playing with instincts. We don't adjust well at all. Did they not think House would eventually get going? Were they seriously fearful of the Texans beating us elsewhere?

What makes it really frustrating is when Gus has his presser and says we should have did this or that....but every week it seems like even he doesn't know why he didn't do adjust this way or that.

And then they always have a "great week" of practice lol

Actually, on the Cyprien play against Foster, they didn't blame coaching they blamed Cyprien for not doing what he should have been basic coverage execution on that play.

They did go on after that to talk about why some of these players aren't seeing the bench when they can't consistently execute and mentioned Sample's injury may be a reason as to why Cyprien hasn't been shown the bench.

Careful what you wish for...  We already are forcing the run---  Its obvious to everyone in the stadium that we are going to run the ball on 1st down.  Everyone sees it coming so they stack the box.

I don't think it's a matter of forcing the run, it's a matter of running the ball conistently, but always on first down. You gotta mix it up.  You gotta be un-predictable.  Forcing the run makes it too predictable.

Do you think we should run more play action mixed with the run. It boggles my mind that we have and will throw it down field but defenses are still selling out to stop the run. I think our oline is a poor run blocking group. Can we resign Vince manuwai?

Lol I couldn't agree more. Remember they were an above average run blocking group. It was our bread and butter. I awalys longed for the day we could chuck it down field. Haha look at it now it's just as frustrating. At least Fred it mjd would have monster games and produce multiple tds. It ate clock and wore down defenses. I want that running game back.

I don't even know why we bother with play action as that really only works well if you're already running the ball well.

Because it is in the game plan.  It worked in practice.

It wasn't just that it was also a play with a defensive penalty so the difference would have been about 8 years.

Quote:People keep bringing up House and blaming coaching on his 4th quarter let down. You ask why after 3 solid quarters did the coaching staff risk leaving House on his own and not feel the need to adjust? You answered your own question. Why adjust something that's working? Hopkins is going to make plays. There are plenty of coaching issues to discuss, just saying the point about House is only hindsight and not really valid in that context

Ding ding ding - winner.

This thread is a joke.

Think you should go look up the first down run to pass ratio. It's not even close to running every first down.

Actually it depends on situation more. If you are in a situation where no one in their right mind runs the ball, or the defense would prefer you run it (3rd and long), they probably will not bite. Also, if the tape shows that you never run it in certain down and distances, parts of the field, formations, etc, they won't bite).

The issue with play action mostly has been it has been poorly executed. Blake is not that deceptive with the ball and he tends to telegraph it with his head/eyes. On top of that there have been numerous occasions where the fake will be to a side without a running back.
