Spurrier Retiring..
|
Quote:"Not really"?!?! How many coaches retire during a season? coaches get fired all the time mid-season. Spurrier just took it upon himself rather than the school having to do it. It's the right move. It's not that weird. Sorry, stop being a drama queen. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today! Quote:Pretty sure he spent more time golfing in Myrtle Beach than coaching in Columbia, SC. Were you aware of the state of SC football before he arrived? He completely turned that team around. They were irrelevant before he got there. Now it's a team with real expectations that he unfortunately now feels like he cant maintain. Quote:coaches get fired all the time mid-season. Again I come face to face with your duplicity when you insult me by calling me names, yet you instruct others not to do the same by the statements in your signature. Back to the point though, I don't feel like I'm being overly dramatic here since it's extremely rare for a long-time coach to retire in the middle of a football season. Yes, coaches do get fired in the middle of the season but I don't think I can remember any long-tenured coach retiring in October. Even Spurrier, when he abruptly left Florida in '02 at least waited for the end of the year to walk away from his football team.

Drama queen isn't really an insult, but ok get butt hurt about it. This situation is no different than a mid-season firing. I dont know why people are getting hung up on this. Spurrier is smart enough to know that he would be fired if he wasn't who he is, so he did the right thing and took it upon himself rather than holding an entire program hostage for several years. That comment was aiming more towards the back-end of his tenure there. He even mentioned, during a press event, that he enjoys playing golf on the same level as coaching football... If Bunnie is correct and it's health-related, I would imagine him releasing a statement or press conference stating so. Again, I think it's unfair to the program as a whole, especially the players, IF this was not health-related. On badger's point: I can say without a doubt that a coach of his stature would not get fired half way through a season - and if it was to occur, it would happen at the end of the season.

Especially after what he's done for the program since he's been there, there is no way they would fire him mid season.
What in the Wide Wide World of Sports is agoin' on here???
Quote:Especially after what he's done for the program since he's been there, there is no way they would fire him mid season. Which is exactly why he chose to remove himself. It's the right thing to do. How many times have we seen old coaches clearly past their prime hold on until the last minute? We show less advertisements to registered users. It's better for the program to move forward and begin thinking about the future. I doubt it's health related.
I'll give it to you badger, for getting this right, but I still stand by my point in thinking it is such a strange situation to "resign" in the middle of the year.
So no talk about this being about his health during his Press Conference. But I did find it intriguing that he delineated that this was a "resignation" rather than a "retirement".
<p style="margin-left:40px;">"...'First of all, I'm resigning, I'm not retiring," said Spurrier. "I doubt I'll coach a college team again, but maybe a high school team.' ..." <p style="margin-left:40px;"> Man, can't you just imagine HBC stomping around a High School sideline?!

He heard he can get a job in Coral Gables in 5 days after Al Golden loses to VT. Better golf courses in S. Florida than in S. Carolina and recruiting is much easier when you right in the middle of all the talent.

They extended him and they aren't goingto eat that money anytime soon. The new president has already made it known that they want to become known more again for their academics then their athletics (namely football).

I do wonder if his health played into this. I wish him the best and thank him for a great career to watch.
So I watched a bit of Spurrier's interview with Rece Davis last night. Man, did that turn my stomach. Spurrier basically said that the team was bad so he was going to walk away. Why can't he just make an announcement that this is his last season and tough out the last two months with his team?!?! The team that he built is bad so he's just going to walk away and let someone else deal with the mess that he made?!
