Why retain Dave Caldwell?

Quote:What is you problem with people criticizing Bortles? Until he proves himself, people have every right to complain. I WANT him to succeed but he sure as hell hasn't no matter how many excuses you want to make.I would not be surprised to see Bortles riding the pine if some competition is there. ![]() We show less advertisements to registered users. Whether you like him or not it's far too early to give up on him. ![]() Quote:I made a thread on this and got blasted. Its true, he essentially was demoted. The only reason he still is here is because hes thought of highly around the league. Im assuming the Jags dont want him getting scooped up by another team. Hes an excellent negotiator though and knows how to get a bargain for his buck. Maybe a few years with a hard nosed football guy like Coughlin will get him groomed to run the organization better. More like a business, less like a frat house. Bargain for buck and spending crazy money on Thomas and Jackson don't go together that well. Quote:I am overwhelmed by the nothingness this draft represents.Vs 2013 draft The Joke- Second overall and he gets demoted to guard and probably won't be resigned. Sliprien- A one trick pony at 33rd overall. He's a dinosaur in the box safety. If the scheme changes enough he might not be on this years roster. He's a product of a bad scheme. Gratz- Stunk. Demoted and released Ace Sanders- Smoked himself out off of the team. I don't know if he still plays Denard Robinson- Qb to Rb experiment is probably over. Coughlin don't like guys who are fumble prone Josh Evans- Horrible every time he played McCray- The "superstar" many pinned around here. Demoted and cut. Harris- I don't remember him making any plays. Mr invisible. ![]() Quote:I would. Whether you like him or not it's far too early to give up on him.Listen man. You can't have a QB going into his 4th year who can't throw a decent NFL ball. If he improves this year, I am all for it. However, If he comes back throwing those lame inaccurate ducks he will hit the pine if a decent backup is there. ![]() We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Quote:Bargain for buck and spending crazy money on Thomas and Jackson don't go together that well.Thomas was due 3 million this year, he hardly hurt out cap. They could of cut him before he was due that and owed him nothing. Sure, he was paid well, but again, his contract was team friendly. They had the opportunity to get out of it after 2 years. Jackson, sure, we splashed the cash. But he was arguably the best FA when we signed him and also, hes a great player and has proved hes worth every penny. Quote:Listen man. However, If he comes back throwing those lame inaccurate ducks he will hit the pine if a decent backup is there. The sad part is Bortles can throw a decent NFL ball. He has made some absolutely jaw dropping throws in his career. But then suddenly, and sometimes for entire quarters he throws nothing but wobbly ducks, spikes into the dirt, and pick 6s. It makes no sense. I've never seen an NFL QB like him.
Make the Jags Great Again

We'll see who's right. ![]() Quote:(Emphasis added)I dont think his biggest blunder was hiring bradley, I think his biggest blunder was keeping him for 4 years. When things started slipping, is was evident to a lot of people. when you are having to fire coordinators as scapegoats because the staff isn't getting the job done, its time to change the staff. I don't think Caldwell should lose his job. this team is clearly a better team than when he got here and i think we can all agree it was not Gus that made that. He had a few misses in the draft but so does every team. he has also hit more than we have seen from arguably any gm we have had. We show less advertisements to registered users. DC is retained because Khan wants to give him a chance. Coughlin waa brought in so Caldwell can learn and get some OJT.
Caldwelll is basically Gus in a suit but with more ?'s so you're not sure whether to fire him or keep him. We're screwed, back to the drawing board, Khan
Quote:Vs And all of them were better as rookies (except maybe McCray who peaked in year 2). The problem wasn't Caldwell, the problem was Gus Bradley ruining the players. Caldwell hired Gus, so that's his biggest failure. We still don't know why Gus was kept for so long. I suspect it was a matter of either or both Khan and DC wanting to honor a promise to Gus that he would get a full four years, given that it was a major rebuild. "Why should I give information to you when all you want to do is find something wrong with it?" Quote:The problem wasn't Caldwell, the problem was Gus Bradley ruining the players. It doesn't have to be one or the other. They teamed up nicely to create one of the worst streaks of ineptitude in NFL history.
Quote:People love to reference the 2008 draft, but Gene was 10 times worse. People also forget the fact that Shack got us Mathis, Greg Jones, MJD, Lewis, Daryl Smith, Scobee, Manawaui , Wilford, Durant and you can even add a guy like Reggie Nelson, who's been a very good NFL players. Gene Smith had equal say in the 2008 draft. "Why should I give information to you when all you want to do is find something wrong with it?" We show less advertisements to registered users. Quote:It doesn't have to be one or the other. They teamed up nicely to create one of the worst streaks of ineptitude in NFL history. Maybe. Let's see how Caldwell's roster looks now that Gus is gone. "Why should I give information to you when all you want to do is find something wrong with it?" Quote:It doesn't have to be one or the other. They teamed up nicely to create one of the worst streaks of ineptitude in NFL history.that is a convenient way to put it, but we both know that a professional sports organization is a hell of a lot more complicated that. Here is another way i look at it. maybe its me being a homer but what ever. what if we fired gus after year one or two. Then moved on to another coach( not in the mood to look all the candidates from that time) and lets just say he slipped too. so we go through another coach. onto 3 coaches in 4 years not including interim coachs which would put us at around 5 different head coaches. We all know these changes would have included personnel and player changes that would have made us look alot the team we were 5 years ago(or even the browns). What FA player or decent coach would want to come to team like that. At least we are in the position where we have a developing team and a coaching job that is arguably more attractive than most of the ones that open around the league. Khan and Dave may not have a ton or respect from some of us for keeping gus as long as they did, but i guarantee that in the realm of coaches what they did is a hell of a lot more respectable than creating a revolving door at the HC position.

I think Dave is pretty good. He screwed the pooch on a few picks and agreeing to Bradley, but he's brought in some quality talent. He's on the short leash, but I think he'll get better at this football-team-building stuff if he gets another crack or two at it. Besides, he's got a pretty good voice in his ear now.

Maybe a few years with a hard nosed football guy like Coughlin will get him groomed to run the organization better. More like a business, less like a frat house. He got a 2 year extension. Doug and Tom both got 3 yrs. So that essentially gives the trio 3 yrs to right the ship. I like Dave as a young mind at the GM position in the league. Being around/under Tom will only give him more experience and make him bettet at his job.
